Overview

Beyond the shadows of any known forest grows the Goblin Oak, an enormous tree lit by hundreds of glowing jack-o-lanterns. All the spirits and strangeness of Halloween come from the Goblin Oak, but a mysterious source of summer magic threatens to destroy it.

Meanwhile, Amber's stuck at home having the worst Halloween ever, until she meets a trio of professional, pumpkin-snatching goblins. Facing a Halloween night of handing out candy, Amber joins them as they use tricks, cobbled-together gadgets, and teleporting pumpkin cars to snatch more pumpkins and strengthen the Goblin Oak.

But the Goblin Oak grows beyond the reach of any map or compass, and is protected by the brambledark: a shifting mass of shadow vines that erases paths and memories.

To find the Goblin Oak, to find what's hurting it, and to save Halloween, Amber must abandon her familiar Halloween and become truly lost.

About the Author

Kris Bowser has spent her life adventuring in the rocky hills and forests of Southern New England. School showed her that dystopia isn’t only found in the future, but goblins taught her the skills that school couldn’t: navigating spooky forests; sneaking into a wizard's fortress to steal cheese; lighting a fire with smoke that curls invitingly into a cloudy evening’s sky; and finding other worlds that exist tucked into corners and around bends. She also attended college, where she studied English, a language she already knew how to read, speak, write, and curse in.

Along with her partner, a renegade gardener who knows the magic uses of plants, Kris is in a rebel band of superheroes and outcasts. She thinks of herself as an intrepid adventurer, roaming with a sketchbook and a typewriter, hopping trains, wearing cargo pants, and running fast. Though in reality, she is often caught in the disempowering and nefarious clutches of Mundane Problems, and must send her characters to do her adventuring for her.

Currently, Kris and her partner live in an old New England mill town, haunted by the spirits and shadows of machines and industry.
