About the Author

Elizabeth Cara received her Certificate of Proficiency in occupational therapy from the University of Pennsylvania. She also holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in History from Santa Clara University, a Master of Arts degree in Clinical Psychology from John F. Kennedy University and a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the Fielding Graduate University. For the last twenty years, she has been a Professor of Occupational Therapy at the undergraduate and graduate levels. Dr. Cara's clinical experience is in the rehabilitation of people with mental disabilities. Her scholarly interests include psychobiography, clinical supervision, infant and family mental health, group dynamics, interpersonal communication, and psychosocial disorders. She is the co-creator of a successful vocational program, Community Vocational Enterprises, in San Francisco, California. Dr. Cara is a native of California.


Anne MacRae received her B.A. degree in education from Antioch College, Yellow Springs, Ohio, and her M.S. degree in occupational therapy from San Jose State University. She also has a PhD in Human Science from Saybrook Institute, San Francisco. Dr. MacRae is a professor at San Jose State University in California. In addition to teaching, she also supervised the campus-based psychosocial occupational therapy clinic for 20 years. Her other clinical experience includes inpatient acute psychiatry, partial hospitalization programs, and home health care. She is also a recipient of multiple Fulbright Fellowships and engages in international consultation about occupational therapy and mental health care. Her current research and scholarly interests include cultural diversity, phenomenology, occupational justice, recovery perspectives, environmental issues in intervention, community mental health, and functional deficits of psychiatric symptoms. Dr. MacRae is currently on a pre-retirement tract from the university, which provides a reduced role at the university and is therefore she is able to pursue additional personal and professional opportunities.

Description: This update of a 2005 book on psychosocial occupational therapy practice incorporates some important developments, specifically the recovery perspective.
Purpose: The purpose is best captured by the subtitle of "An Evolving Practice," reflecting the dramatic changes that have occurred in mental health practice. The recovery perspective is prominent throughout, as is a strengths-based perspective.
Audience: The authors note that the book is written largely for occupational therapy students, but would be helpful for occupational therapy practitioners as well.
Features: This book provides an overview of the current mental health system, both from a recovery perspective and a theoretical perspective. It also covers the history of psychosocial practice. Major diagnostic categories are covered in sufficient detail, while the authors acknowledge that this book was published before the release of the new DSM-5 diagnostic classification system. Chapters describe specialty areas of practice such as children's mental health services and the criminal justice system, which reflect current emerging areas of practice within OT. A unique chapter that doesn't appear in other books covers fieldwork supervision in mental health practice. The glossary is quite helpful. The only shortcoming of the book, although acknowledged by the authors, is the timing of its publication just prior to the new DSM-5. To be sure, there are no occupational therapy books that do incorporate DSM-5 currently.
Assessment: The major competitor to this book is Occupational Therapy in Mental Health: A Vision for Participation, Brown & Stoffel (F. A. Davis, 2010). The books are similar in their coverage of the topic, although this book has some additional chapters that are important — namely a chapter on research and a chapter on fieldwork supervision. It also has numerous case illustrations, detailed program descriptions, learning activities, and web links, all of which make it an ideal choice for students who want to see examples. This edition is a significant expansion of the previous one, reflecting changes in the mental health service delivery system.
