Raj Dasgupta is Raj Dasgupta is associate professor of clinical medicine, division of pulmonary, critical care and sleep medicine and is the associate program director of Internal Medicine residency program. He actively teaches USMLE Step 1, 2, 3, and Internal Medicine Board Review around the world for the past 15 years through Kaplan and other organizations and institutions. These are worthy objectives as board examinations and medical school shelf exams are of increasing importance. The book and ebook meet the objectives of reviewing pertinent information on a variety of psychiatric topics so readers may feel prepared for board examinations.
Audience: This book is intended for medical students preparing for the psychiatry shelf exam and USMLE board exam. It may also serve as a refresher on basic psychiatry concepts for non-psychiatric providers, but the level of depth is likely too low for practicing psychiatrists to find useful. The book meets the needs of the intended audience as the degree of complexity is sufficient to prepare a medical student for an exam. The authors are experts in the field of psychiatry based on their credentials.
Features: The book covers a variety of pertinent psychiatric concepts and topics, from the clinical interview through several commonly treated diagnostic categories such as mood disorders, psychotic disorders, substance use disorders, etc. Chapters on basic psychopharmacology as well as special considerations such as medication toxicity and withdrawal are also discussed. The case presentation format for each chapter is helpful for relating the information to a clinical setting, but the chapters for more commonly addressed disorders such as depression and anxiety present minimal information. The chapters are succinct and easy to digest, however, which may be appreciated by some readers. The book also includes logical tables and visuals when necessary, which are aesthetically pleasing.
Assessment: While the book and ebook are of good quality overall, the format and information presented are not unique as a review book for exam preparation. There are more well-established and highly reviewed books available for this purpose, such as First Aid for the Psychiatry Clerkship, 5th edition, Ganti et al. (McGraw Hill, 2019), which is more robust in the amount of information and depth it provides on many, if not all, of the same topics discussed in the book being reviewed. Furthermore, there are review books such as Case Files: Psychiatry, 5th edition, Toy and Klamen (McGraw Hill, 2016), which use a similar case presentation format. This book may provide another option for readers, but it does not differ from the book being reviewed in its content or formatting.
