About the Author

Juan E. Mezzich MD, PhD, is current president of the World Psychiatric Association. He is professor of psychiatry and director, division of Psychiatric Epidemiology and International Center for Mental Health, at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine, New York University. He has held professorships at Stanford and the University of Pittsburgh. He has been a leader in the development of the DSM. He has authored or coauthored over 200 scientific journal articles and book chapters (including current sections on international diagnosis and psychiatric epidemiology).

Ruben Hernandez, MD is professor of forensic psychiatry at the Central University of Venezuela. He is a leader in sexual health (formerly called sexology) throughout Latin America having served as president of many professional organizations including, among many others, the Venezuelan Society of Medical Sexology and the International Academy of Sexology.

Doctors Mezzich (psychiatry, Mount Sinai Sch. of Medicine, NYU; president, World Psychiatric Assn.) and Hernandez (forensic psychiatry, Central Univ. of Venezuela) have produced a comprehensive, progressive, and readable volume on a difficult and important topic. The pair headed a work group of international scholars, clinicians, and researchers to develop the Educational Program on Sexual Health. This book is the result of that collaboration. Thorough and weighty, it is neither dull nor deferential to conservative pressure. Comprehensive sex education; respect for privacy and choice in sexual life; access to condoms, other contraceptives, and safe abortion; and repudiation of such practices as female circumcision and sexual coercion are thematic. Although supported in part by Pfizer, the book includes chapters on diagnoses and treatments that eschew the quick pharmaceutical fix in favor of careful sexual histories and inclusion of partners in treatment. Health professionals learn to address delicate topics gently but clearly, upholding respectful treatment of diverse individuals as such. About half of the text is for specialists (e.g., diagnostic criteria and codes). The less technical chapters are inspiring for health workers, educators, policymakers, and general readers on the integration of scientific and humane efforts for better loving worldwide.
