Overview

Promoting mobility for people with dementia: a problem-solving approach published by Alzheimer's Society is the definitive guide to one of the challenges most commonly faced by people with dementia as well as carers. It is authored by Rosemary Oddy, former head of Leicestershire's mental health physiotherapy service.

Maintaining physical activity can significantly impact on the well-being of someone with dementia and it can also enable greater co-operation and opportunity for activities when you are working and caring for someone.

This influential book is now in its third edition. It has been revised and updated and also has a completely new design. Features of the book include case studies which highlight suggestions to overcome real life everyday problems as well as clear illustrations and helpful tips on specific techniques. At the end of each chapter a summary of key points is listed along with training exercises which reinforce and encourage practice of the chapter topics.

Chapters cover the following areas: dementia and mobility; making communication easier; non-verbal communication and movement strategies;
managing fear; making assistance more effective; the environment; planning for success; making the most of touch; seeking professional help; exercise.

The book also includes an appendix that lists simple strategies for success. These give clear instructions on how to manage common areas of difficulty for specific actions such as managing steps and stairs, and moving from sitting to standing. Other appendices provide information on useful contacts, references and further reading and the book further benefits from an extensive index, making it very easy for users to find the information they need.
