Description: This is a compilation of 21 recent articles related to the global HIV pandemic that were published in the International Quarterly of Community Health Education in recent years.
Purpose: A wide variety of major issues are covered, including the epidemic's current status, controversies, and recent innovations. Several interesting articles address the trials and tribulations of HIV intervention efforts in other parts of the world, especially Africa.
Audience: The broad menu provides topics of interest for many different audiences, although health educators and students of the social sciences represent the primary target. Although the range of topics is broad, there is considerable variability among the articles in quality and appeal. The editors are highly credible authorities in their field, but not all contributors are as authoritative.
Features: The basic features of the book are largely unremarkable. There is much variability in the use of charts, graphs, and tables from article to article. The currency and pertinence of cited references also vary. The index, table of contents, and appearance are adequate for this type of work.
Assessment: This book is most useful as an ancillary compendium of readings for courses on HIV issues, especially international HIV issues. Otherwise, its unevenness and the availability of the same material directly from other sources argue against its purchase by health science libraries.
