Description: This overview of nursing's major contemporary issues includes concepts from the American Association of Colleges of Nursing's (AACN) latest (2008) Essentials document.
Purpose: The purpose is to help students understand the role of the professional nurse through its history and the identification of nursing's values, standards, and ethics. It is also intended to help students comprehend the influence of social and economic factors on the practice of nursing.
Audience: This book is appropriate for bridge courses in RN-BSN courses and early courses for generic baccalaureate students. It also could be used as a resource for practicing nurses and graduate students.
Features: The 16 chapters match the number of weeks in a semester. Chapters can stand alone and can be read in any order. This edition has been streamlined with some material found on the Evolve website. Designed to be student friendly, the book takes care to include visual features to aid the visual learner. Key terms are in boldface and are included in the glossary. Chapters include self-assessment exercises, evidence-based practice notes, and critical thinking exercises. Cultural challenges are found in several chapters. There is an instructor's manual with activities for both large and small groups and for in-class and out-of-class sessions, as well as chapter outlines and objectives, and suggested readings. An instructor suite includes PowerPoint Lectures, a comprehensive test bank, and audience-response questions.
Assessment: This book is rich in content, yet readable for novices as well as seasoned professionals. The topics are very timely and lend themselves well to reflection and discussion.
