Maigret lucreaza la sediul politiei din Saint George, in subordinea lui Maxime Le Bret. Catre miezul noptii, un tanar muzician navaleste in birou si anunta ca a vazut o femeie tipand dupa ajutor in dreptul unei cladiri de pe Rue Chaptal si apoi a auzit o impuscatura. Ajuns la fata locului, Maigret este intampinat de locatari si asigurat ca totul este in ordine. Maigret insa porneste in rezolvarea primului sau caz.

Georges Simenon (1903-1989) is one of the most widely read and published novelists of all time. He wrote more than two hundred books under his own name including seventy-five Jules Maigret novels, for which he is best known, and more than two hundred under a series of pseudonyms. He published his first book in 1931 and his last in 1972.
