Overview

«Pride and Prejudice» is a novel by Jane Austen, first published in 1813. The story follows the main character Elizabeth Bennet as she deals with issues of manners, upbringing, morality, education, and marriage in the society of the landed gentry of early 19th-century England.

Though the story is set at the turn of the 19th century, it retains a fascination for modern readers, continuing near the top of lists of «most loved books». It has become one of the most popular novels in English literature and receives considerable attention from literary scholars. Modern interest in the book has resulted in a number of dramatic adaptations and an abundance of novels and stories imitating Austen’s memorable characters or themes.

The «Animedia Company» e-book edition of the «Pride and Prejudice» is colorfully illustrated by Charles Edmund Brock and introducted by George Saintsbury.

About the Author

About The Author
Jane Austen (1775–1817) was an English author known primarily for her six major novels set among the British landed gentry at the end of the 18th century. Considered defining works of the Regency Era and counted among the best–loved classics of English literature, Austen's books include Sense and Sensibility, Pride and Prejudice, Mansfield Park, Emma, Northanger Abbey, and Persuasion. The latter two were published after her death. "I declare after all there is no enjoyment like reading! How much sooner one tires of any thing than of a book! When I have a house of my own, I shall be miserable if I have not an excellent library." – Jane Austen
