About the Author

Seth S. Martin received his medical degree from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his internal medicine training at Duke University. He completed a cardiology fellowship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. He was designated the Henry R. Kravis&Marie-Josée Cardiovascular Fellow and also served as a Pollin Cardiovascular Prevention Fellow. Dr. Martin was awarded the Howard S. Silverman Research Award for originality and creativity in medical research. Additionally, he was recognized as an Up and Coming Future Star of Cardiology by the American College of Cardiology. During his fellowship, Dr. Martin obtained a Master of Health Science degree at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. After completing the fellowship, Dr. Martin joined the Johns Hopkins Cardiology faculty. He is a core faculty member with the Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease and co-directs the Advanced Lipid Disorders Center. Dr. Martin also servesas an Associate Faculty member in the Welch Center for Prevention, Epidemiology, and Clinical Research. He has a longstanding interest in preventive cardiology, in particular cardiovascular risk assessment, lipidology, and mobile health technology. Dr. Martin cares for patients with both acute and chronic illnesses and serves on the Hopkins Bedside Medicine Faculty. He is a Firm Faculty Clinical Coach and Educator with the Janeway Firm of the Osler Medical Residency. He also participates in teaching medical students and public health students.

The chapter authors are well known experts in their respective fields. They have done an exceptional job of describing the precise use of diagnostic modalities in different patient populations.
Purpose: The book presents the opinions of the authors mixed with the available literature on the appropriate use of available diagnostic modalities in the prevention of cardiovascular diseases. It covers extensively all the factors affecting cardiovascular diseases including social determinants of health, biomarkers, genomics, imaging, and shared decision making.
Audience: The wide-ranging audience includes cardiologists, internists, primary care providers, residents, medical students, and midlevel providers. The simple terminology and the images meet the needs of all members of this audience, regardless of their stage of education.
Features: The first of the book's eight parts is a comprehensive discussion of the social determinants of health, the available evidence, and the importance in the interpretation of total attributable risk in specific patient populations. The second and third parts discuss the genomics, various common and not so common cardiac biomarkers, specifically focusing on current use and potential future use. Part four focuses on the available imaging modalities and their precise selection in risk stratification of patients. This book concludes with a topic that is well known to many yet still so vague — shared decision making. This chapter nails down specific nuances and provides guidance in helping both clinicians and patients make informed decisions. It discusses various techniques to discuss abnormal findings with patients and connecting to patients on an individual level.
