Overview

In the spring of 1865, five women set out on a trip from New Orleans to Galveston by merchant ship, then by horse drawn wagon to a boardinghouse in Dallas. Emily is the leader. Blanche is the strong one—steadfast and confident. Tilly has a spirit that all the challenges of their trip can’t dampen. Marge is always looking over her shoulder in hopes of seeing the father of her unborn child. Gloria Jean is seemingly the shy one, but she is always watchful for details and always thinking. Ben, a newly freed plantation worker, is their trail master. This story, based on Emily’s diary, tells of five women who learn to laugh in the face of misfortune, overcome many obstacles, and help each other through their darkest hours. Ben is older. He become like a father to them. His love holds them together and requires him to let go when the time is right. Letting go proves to be his hardest challenge.

About the Author

After focusing on technical and historical writing, Richard moved to Jacksonville, Florida, and turned his attention to writing novels, taking his passion for history with him.
