This is a compact guide on the practical management of the hypertensive individual written by an astute group of Australian and European authors. The first edition was published in 1990. Its primary aim is ""to promote a utilitarian train of thought in the decision-making process in practice"" regarding the ""many dilemmas that surround diagnosis, surveillance and the intention to treat or not to treat."" The authors are successful but they omit some key points that relate to the evaluation and treatment of hypertension in the United States. The book is written for the generalist as well as the specialist (internal medicine, family practice, and cardiology, to name a few) in the practice of clinical medicine. The book is well written with many useful tables that lend the subject matter to a lecture-type of format. The written material is also tightly organized in an outline form maintained throughout the text. Each chapter is appropriately referenced. This book does an excellent job of concisely addressing many of the pertinent issues surrounding the clinical practice of hypertension. However, it lacks certain attention to issues endogenous to the United States, such as discussion of the guidelines from the 5th report of the Joint National Committee on Hypertension. This, coupled with its published price, diminish its usefulness.
