Power in Preaching
To preach the Word of God boringly, lifelessly or indifferently is a travesty of biblical preaching. Contemporary preaching appears powerless because the preacher is unctionless. For preaching to transform lives and not merely to transmit knowledge, preachers need the unction of the Holy Spirit. In Power in Preaching, Johnson Lim examines the idea that a sermon powered by logic and rhetoric and accompanied by erudition and eloquence can be inspiring and interesting; but only a sermon powered by the Spirit is life transforming. Lim also explores the authority of a preacher, axioms of preaching, hermeneutical protocols for reading biblical texts, and preaching in (post) modernity. By suggesting a better way to preach, and giving some practical tips on maximizing a preacher's oratorical powers, Dr. Lim tries to lead preachers out of the Wilderness of dull, insipid and boring preaching into the Promised Land of dynamic, enthusiastic and vibrant preaching.
