About the Author

Leon Chaitow ND DO is an internationally known and respected osteopathic and naturopathic practitioner and teacher of soft tissue manipulation methods of treatment. He is author of over 60 books, including a series on Advanced Soft Tissue Manipulation (Muscle Energy Techniques, Positional Release Techniques, Modern Neuromuscular Techniques) and also Palpation Skills; Cranial

Manipulation: Theory and Practice; Fibromyalgia Syndrome: A Practitioner’s Guide to Treatment, and many more. He is editor of the peer reviewed Journal of Bodywork and Movement Therapies, that offers a multidisciplinary perspective on physical methods of patient care. Leon Chaitow was for many years senior lecturer on the Therapeutic Bodywork degree courses which he helped to design at the School of Integrated Health, University of Westminster, London, where is he now an Honorary Fellow. He continues to teach and practice part-time in London, when not in Corfu, Greece where he focuses on his writing.

Description: This book discusses the theoretical and clinical basis for those osteopathic and chiropractic techniques lumped under the term "positional release technique." Thus, there is information on strain/counterstrain technique, functional technique, facilitated positional release, and some variations on those techniques. There are many illustrations used to demonstrate specific maneuvers and these are of high quality. Substantial discussion of fibromyalgia and myofascial pain syndrome also occurs. This would make a very good teaching text.
Purpose: Although there is no foreword that specifically discusses purpose, it seems that this book is intended to discuss and compare all the different positional release procedures and provide clinical information on their use. The emphasis is on treatment considerations.
Audience: Osteopaths and chiropractors will find much to admire and use in this book. The book will also find an audience among physical therapists and massage therapists, and perhaps physical medicine specialists. Students of these disciplines will find this useful as well.
Features: Each chapter starts by providing theoretical information on each technique, so that the clinical use can later be better understood. Each chapter also has numerous illustrations to help support those procedures described in the text. The references are current and up-to-date; there are many of them in each chapter.
Assessment: This will make a good introduction to the procedures it describes. It is not authoritative in the sense of describing everything that can be known on its topic, but as a teaching text or a text to familiarize the reader with the topic, it succeeds admirably. It will also make a very useful teaching text, more so in osteopathy than in chiropractic.
