Overview

Portraits of France is part memoir, part journalism, part history, and part gastronomic adventure. From a rustic chateau where Lafayete was born, to a lung busting mountain bike race, from Abelard and Heloise to a lost concentration camp in the Pyrenees, best selling author Robert Daley's insightful book is an intensely personal tour of the history and culture of a France not found in guidebooks. Here you will find the Pontacs, who for five generations dominated Bordeaux, and the Sansons, public executioners for six generations, and Charles Wells, the original "man who broke the bank at Monte Carlo," and Grace Kelly, who, it could be said, saved Monte Carlo from bankruptcy. Here is Verdun, the terrible battle that ruined France, and the story of how the "fabulous" Riviera came to be, the stories of Lourdes, and of the perfume capital, Grasse, and much much more.

About the Author

Robert Daley is a former New York Times foreign correspondent. During the years he was based in France, first in Nice, then in Paris, he covered stories in 18 countries. He is the author of 28 books, including Prince of the City, Year of the Dragon, The Innocents Within and The Dangerous Edge. Six of his books have been filmed, and his work has been translated into fourteen languages. He disembarked in France for the first time after two weeks at sea in a cabin for eight on D-deck. He was a nearly penniless 23 year old with big ambitions. He planned to become a great writer and the fabulous Riviera seemed the place to do it. He met his wife to be the afternoon of that first day, they were married three months later, and his love affair with the country has never flagged. The couple has three grown daughters. They still keep an apartment Nice, where they spend about half of each year.
