About the Author

Originally from Malaysia but I've been living in Australia for about 25 years. I'm the eldest in my family and I've got one sister. My parents both studied in Australia so I guess they knew how good the country was before we moved over here permanently. My upbringing was typical of many other Asian kids that moved to Australia, and that was study hard and have no social life till your out of high school. Throughout my high school years I was always loved creative writing and English was my best and favorite subject. I ended up getting straight A's in my entrance exams.

Gr 6-9–Talk about focusing on the negative. With Powell’s now-infamous 2003 Weapons of Mass Destruction speech to the UN serving as a beginning and confusingly abrupt ending point, this book shows promise but ultimately disappoints. Powell’s life has been one of dedicated service to America. With the help of the author’s first-person narration, readers follow him from his youth in the South Bronx, to his college years where he joins the ROTC, through his service in Vietnam and cabinet positions for Presidents Reagan, H. W. Bush, and George W. Bush. Powell is presented as the driving force behind America’s quick evacuation after Operation Desert Storm, but his role in the invasion of Iraq is not as rosy. The book awkwardly concludes with a bitter Powell forced out of his position as Secretary of State. The text, mostly appearing in caption boxes, moves briskly, hitting the important points of Powell’s rise to military and political prominence. The modern comic-book artwork is expressive, with clear panel layouts, captions, and speech bubbles.
