About the Author

Samuel Austin Allibone (1816–1889) was an American writer and bibliographer, best known for his extensive knowledge of British and American literature. He compiled the three-volume Critical Dictionary of English Literature and British and American Authors, which boasts entries from more than 46,000 authors. He also published numerous anthologies, worked as a librarian and book editor, and created an index to Washington Irving's Life and Letters (1861-1864).
