POEMS FROM THE GREEN
Poems on the Green is a celebration of writing done by members of two Washington, DC, area groups, Writers on the Green Line and Poets on the Green Line, in conjunction with interactive workshops that have been running for nearly twenty years. Just before the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, a group of us came together to develop a collection of poetry composed during sessions or about themes explored in those sessions. Poems on the Green contains work by some of the many writers and facilitators who have participated in meetings over the years. Currently, the group, now known as Poets on the Green Line (PGL), is running virtually.

About the Author

To celebrate writing done by members of two groups, Writers on the Green Line and Poets on the Green Line, a group of us have come together to develop a collection of poetry composed during sessions or about themes explored in those sessions. The Collection Committee team consisted of Kitty Templeton, Stacie Marinelli, P.S. Perkins, and Sam Doolittle. Since so many people have attended workshops of the two groups in the past 15 years, please note that the contributions in this volume represent only a small number of writers who have been part of these community workshops.

Writers on the Green Line (WGL), community writing sessions led for many years by Elizabeth Bruce and Michael Oliver, was active from 2007-2019 (see the history following this introduction). The newer group Poets on the Green Line (PGL) was organized in 2020 by P.S. Perkins, Gabrielle Grunau and Pat Jacobs who served as Tri-Chairs. (Note that Gabrielle writes as Gabe Franklin and Pat writes as P.D. Jacobs.) Beginning in 2022, the group continued with the current leadership of Kitty Templeton and Sam Doolittle who keep up the website and meetup site, schedule meetings, and provide themes and/or guest facilitators for each workshop. Since the pandemic, PGL has met on Zoom, with one recent in-person meeting.

Our interactive writing workshops have been led by members and guest facilitators. Workshops aim to spark new writing through exercises that have included words, photos, musical prompts, collage making, and other innovative ways to approach the art of writing. Writers on the Green Line also presented workshops outside monthly meetings, including Acting for Writers and Performetry, a poetry reading series. Poets on the Green Line generally presents monthly themes based on seasonal or topical events to inspire group writing as well as sessions where writers share work written outside the group. Many of the contributors to this collection were workshop leaders as well as participants.
