Description: This is the third edition of a concise, clinically relevant, pocket pediatric reference.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick lookup for clinicians about to see a child in the clinic, office, emergency department, or hospital on the unit. This is definitely a worthy objective and the author and contributors have done an excellent job of providing the basics.
Audience: This portable reference is written for pediatric healthcare practitioners in training. I think this can include medical students, residents, fellows, and attending physicians, as well as nurse practitioners and physician assistants. The book meets the needs of the intended audience as a great starting point with current references that are easily accessible on the computer.
Features: This is not meant to be a comprehensive reference, but it covers the clinical issues that pediatric practitioners will see most regularly. It is organized by system and is practical, clinically relevant, easy to use, and concise. It fits in a pocket and since, generally, we have access to a computer in some form, the references are easy to look up for more detail. The basics are readily available to enable clinicians to get started with the initial diagnostic evaluation and management of the patient.
Assessment: This pocket guide provides the basics for clinicians to get a start on the initial diagnostic evaluation and management of the more common clinical problems seen in children. Clinicians will find it useful wherever they are seeing their patients. I can recommend it highly.
