Overview

Pocket Clinical Examination is an introduction to history taking and the examination of patients. It has step by step instructions for the junior medical officer working on the ward for the first time. It aims to provide a solid foundation from which students can develop their own systematic approaches. Details of the mechanisms of symptoms and signs, and comprehensive lists of differential diagnosis are not included but may be found in the larger text Clinical Examination. There is a section on writing and presenting the history and physical examination. PCE provides an introduction to physical examination and a place where students can go for revision before examining patients.

This pocket review of the patient history and physical examination includes a summary of the examination of major organ systems in the last chapters. The purpose is to provide an introduction to history taking and examination of patients for beginning medical students. This is a complement to the authors' larger book Clinical Examination: A Systematic Guide to Physical Diagnosis (Blackwell Science, 1996). This book is designed for junior and senior medial students to carry and refer to as needed on wards. It is appropriate for medical students to use as they are learning to take histories and perform physical exams; however, it may not be necessary for students to carry it on wards. The authors begin with an introduction to taking a history and beginning a physical exam as well as the relevant history and physical exam for most organ systems. There is a good summary of the examination of major organ systems at the end. In addition, the ""Hints"" at the end of each chapter may be helpful. There is no explanation of the female gynecological exam nor a section on the back exam. Differential diagnosis for abnormal physical findings is sparse. Also, the chapter on documentation lacks an extensive description of the normal exam documentation, including commonly used abbreviations. The information presented in this book is very useful for medical students to review. The small size enables students to carry it in their pockets. It is less comprehensive than a full size text, and students may need to refer to a more complete text for details and finer points of the physical exam. Overall, it is a good pocket reference for students starting out on the wards, although it maynot be as useful as students' history and exam skills progress due to the lack of advanced exam techniques.
