James L. (Buddy) Estes took a trip in 1957 with five other friends down the Alabama River on a homemade raft from Montgomery to Mobile. While on that trip, one of the friends told the story about Red Eagle and his famous leap from a bluff. That legend sparked an interest in the author to learn more about Red Eagle and the Creek Indians that lived in Alabama, especially since the story takes place in and around the area where he grew up. That research lead to the book Plight of Red Eagle and an Account of the Creek Indian War on its Bicentennial; compiled from many of those research reference sources.
Estes has written 2 other books, Alabama's Youngest Admirals and a cookbook named Possum and Sweet Potatoes. Alabama's Youngest Admirals is on Nook and Kindle. Estes lives in Baton Rouge, Louisiana with his wife.
