About the Author

Rebecca Olien discovered the playful approach to writing during her twenty-years as a classroom teacher. When kids brought writing notebooks outside for recess she knew she was on to something! She now teaches education courses at Southern Oregon University and for the READ Oregon program. She is the author of over fifty books for children and educators.

Created in full support of Common Core Standards for statewide American instruction, Playful Writing: 150 Open-Ended Explorations in Emergent Literacy is a supplementary resource for instructors of children ages three to eight, filled with ideas to encourage young students to write creatively. Some activities involve inexpensive materials for playtime (such as sidewalk chalk or a basket of simple toy vehicles) to get little ones thinking about something before writing and drawing. Suggestions for "early writers" and "ready writers" refine each activity. For example, after taking children for a walk on a windy day and using provided "Talk About It" questions (such as "What motion do the trees make in the wind?") to get them thinking, children can be encouraged to write messages on streamers that fly in the wind. "...ask Early Writers what kind of messages they might like to send out on a windy day... Encourage the children to write and draw special messages or wishes with markers across the lengths of their streamers... Ready Writers will be able to create longer sentences and experiment with word choice when writing their messages. Messages can also be tied together to form longer messages or streamer poetry."
