Physics

Physics, 12th Edition focuses on conceptual understanding, problem solving, and providing real-world applications and relevance. Conceptual examples, Concepts and Calculations problems, and Check Your Understanding questions help students understand physics principles. Math Skills boxes, multi-concept problems, and Examples with reasoning steps help students improve their reasoning skills while solving problems. "The Physics Of" boxes, and new "Physics in Biology, Sports, and Medicine" problems show students how physics principles are relevant to their everyday lives.

A wide array of tools help students navigate through this course, and keep them engaged by encouraging active learning. Animated pre-lecture videos (created and narrated by the authors) explain the basic concepts and learning objectives of each section. Problem-solving strategies are discussed, and common misconceptions and potential pitfalls are addressed. Chalkboard videos demonstrate step-by-step practical solutions to typical homework problems. Finally, tutorials that implement a step-by-step approach are also offered, allowing students to develop their problem-solving skills.

About the Author

David Young received his Ph.D. in experimental condensed matter physics from Florida State University in 1998. He then held a post-doc position in the Department of Chemistry and the Princeton Materials Institute at Princeton University before joining the faculty in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University in 2000. His research focuses on the synthesis and characterization of high-quality single crystals of novel electronic and magnetic materials. He is the coauthor of almost 200 research publications that have appeared in peer-reviewed journals. Professor Young has received multiple awards for outstanding teaching of undergraduates.

Shane Stadler received his Ph.D. in experimental condensed matter physics from Tulane University in 1998. He went on to accept a National Research Council Postdoctoral Fellowship with the Naval Research Laboratory where he researched artificially structured magnetic materials. He then joined the faculty in the Department of Physics at Southern Illinois University before joining the faculty of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at Louisiana State University in 2008.
