Description: This book was originally published in 1994. It is the definitive text regarding all aspects of physician assistant practice, and is used in many settings, most notably primary education of prospective physician assistants. The structure of history, financial, and social perspectives and clinical competencies are imperative for not only the student in training, but also the practicing physician assistant to stay current.
Purpose: The purpose is to reflect growth and change in the profession. It acts as a basis for physician assistant practice, as well as a competent reference for non-physician assistant readers. It is needed to define the scope of physician assistant practice. Other texts can act as basis for medical competencies, but cannot define the role within the medical professions. It is important not only to study the skills aspects of medicine, but also to understand the identity of one's own profession.
Audience: The book appears to be written primarily for the student, but has content important for the professional in special circumstances. The seasoned physician assistant considering a change of roles will find this a valuable resource. Examples are provided, such as new clinical and administrative positions, and are valuable. The editors, I believe, have provided an effective framework for study. Having drawn from a number of professional authors and settings helps the editors expand readership, as well as provide a high credibility to subject content.
Features: Coverage ranges from the socioeconomic networks needed to the specifics of role and clinical practice. The editors do a better job with the history and administrative aspects of practice, but are a bit weak regarding clinical practice. I do feel however, that the clinical descriptions and skills contained form a basis for further study.
Assessment: This book is certainly an essential for the physician assistant educator; it sets a basis for continued growth and study for physician assistants. Changes in the profession are chronicled, and thought-provoking discussions regarding the future of the profession are provided. The improvements in the second edition are valued. The use of case studies, clinical application, and the development of "Critical Thinking" make this an appropriate evolution.
