About the Author

Alfred G. Bracciano, MScA, EdD, OTR/L, FAOTA, is a clinician and academician. He earned his undergraduate degree in Occupational Therapy from Wayne State University (Detroit, Michigan); his Master of Science degree in Hospital and Health Administration at Central Michigan University (Mt. Pleasant, Michigan); and his doctorate in Educational Leadership from Western Michigan University (Kalamazoo, Michigan). He was inducted as a Fellow in the American Occupational Therapy Association (AOTA) for his work in expanding international practice and professional education. Dr. Bracciano holds an academic appointment as Professor at Creighton University, Coordinator of the Creighton University/University of Alaska Pathway; Visiting Professor, Jinan University, Guangzhou, China; and Lecturer, Yonsei University, Seoul, South Korea. Prior to his appointment at Creighton, Dr. Bracciano held appointments as Founding Chair and Professor, Occupational Therapy Program, Saginaw Valley State University in Michigan; as well as Clinical Associate Professor, Stony Brook University in New York.

Dr. Bracciano has been a vocal advocate in the appropriate use and application of physical agent modalities and assisted several states and organizations in developing licensing and regulatory guidelines related to their use. He has published and lectured extensively on physical agents, their clinical application, education, and competency in occupational therapy with more than 200 national and international presentations. He is recognized as a subject matter expert on physical agents to the AOTA and the U.S. Department of Defense, U.S. Army. Dr. Bracciano has served on a variety of AOTA committees related to licensing and regulations, scope of practice, and physical agents; coauthored the AOTA Position Statement on Physical Agent Modalities; and contributed chapters to several rehabilitation textbooks, including Radomski and Trombly's Occupational Therapy for Physical Dysfunction, Fifth and Sixth Editions; Jacobs and MacRae's Occupational Therapy Essentials for Clinical Competence, Third Edition; and Mahle and Ward's Adult Physical Conditions: Intervention Strategies for Occupational Therapy Assistants.

Dr. Bracciano serves as a reviewer and on editorial boards for the American Journal of Occupational Therapy, British Journal of Occupational Therapy, Journal of Rural Health, Journal of Alternative Complementary & Integrative Medicine, Chinese Journal of Clinical Rehabilitative Tissue Engineering Research, and Journal of Athletic Medicine.

Description: This book covers physical agent modalities (PAMs) used by occupational therapists. The book opens with a chapter on theoretical framework, which includes the relationship between occupational performance, client factors, and PAMs, followed by a chapter on regulatory guidelines. There are also chapters on wound healing, pain theory, and perception, followed by several chapters that cover a variety of PAMs. Chapters that cover specific types of physical agent modalities are structured into the following: History/Terminology/Basic Principles, Clinical Application, Indications/Precautions/Contraindications, Documentation, and Case Study. This is the third edition, published in 2022. Compared to the second edition, which was published in 2008, this version has improved visuals (color versus black and white) and updated pictures, tables, and grids. There is an additional addendum detailing a summary of states requiring competency in physical agents, and changes to the appendix section, which now provides more detailed information on neuromuscular electrical stimulation (NMES). This edition has also been updated with current occupational therapy terminology and philosophy.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide readers with the basis and evidence for the selection and application of physical agents in a clear and understandable language. The authors want to convey that physical agents, like any other approach, are tools for occupational therapists to address underlying clinical performance issues negatively affecting a client's life, independence, or quality of life. The objectives of this book are worthy and cover a variety of bases including defining physical agents and their use, but also clearly describing the relationship between the use of physical agents and occupational performance, client factors, and the biophysical impact of the agents' use. This book appears to meet all objectives and provides a clear structure in each chapter. Because of its ease of use, this book could be used as a reference for "how-to" perform a physical agent modality, but also as a teaching tool for students and newer practitioners on the use of PAMs.
Audience: The audience of this book is both practitioners and students. According to the author, this book is for any occupational therapist or occupational therapy student who is interested in using PAMs, regardless of the setting in which they are working. This book meets the needs of the intended audience, as it describes both theory and application of the chosen PAMs it covers. There are also updated changes in competencies for the use of physical agent modalities since the second edition, and an updated appendix section for the use of NMES. The primary author appears to be a credible authority about PAMs based on the "About the Author" section and his extensive experience in working with several agencies on the topic.
Features: The most striking improvement in the third edition is the several high-quality, color images of examples throughout the book. There are also colorized charts and grids that make it very easy to understand the author's intended direction. Each chapter is organized in a similar manner, and precautions/contraindications are clearly listed in red boxes for the readers to locate easily. Each chapter has a case study to highlight the use of the chosen PAM, which include ample references. The appendix at the end of the book is extremely helpful for placement of NMES and includes clear and high-quality pictures.
Assessment: This book is high quality, beneficial to its intended audience, and easy to use for practitioners in the clinic. Compared to other books in the field, this book is easy to use in terms of its size (paperback and somewhat smaller). It acts as a quick reference to assist with finding information such as electrode placement, contraindications/precautions, and parameters, but also offers another layer of education including theoretical framework and the importance of occupational performance. There are many updates that make this third edition superior to the second edition, including updates to visuals, the appendix, and regulatory guidelines.
