Photographers' Introduction to the Boudoir

Overview

According to the Concise Oxford Dictionary, a boudoir is a woman’s bedroom or a small private room. Hence photography for the boudoir generally consists of images that depict the woman of the house in desirable or seductive poses which often means in or half out of intimate lingerie to show off her most attractive features. ‘Attractive’ in this instance meaning in terms of sex appeal.
The fact that these pictures are intended for the bedroom means that only those who are granted access to the boudoir are likely to see them so they can tend to be more risqué than those displayed in the lounge room. They are not intended for general viewing. They are intended as a tribute to the charms of the lady of the house and are quite often initiated by the lady herself.
However, sometimes the model requires that the pictures remain anonymous and that her face is not seen in the picture and we, as photographers, must accede to that perfectly reasonable stipulation. Sometimes, however, that request comes rather late in the day and we have a number of good shots in which the subject’s face is clearly shown. I am originally from the UK and am now a resident of the Snowy Mountains in New South Wales, Australia. I have been a regularly published writer and photographer for many years with many articles published in Australian Photography, Australian Camera and Better Photography (Australia). My work has appeared in well over sixty publications, mainly in Australia and the UK. I also founded and edited The Black and White Enthusiast magazine when I represented the UK publisher Creative Monochrome in Australia. This magazine was eventually sold and has since become Silvershotz. I also wrote a column on freelancing for the UK magazine F2 Freelance + Digital and have interviewed a number of leading photographers including Charlie Waite, considered the doyen of landscape photographers in the UK. I have qualified as a Licentiate of the Royal Photographic Society (LRPS) with a panel of black and white prints and am a former member of the Australian Society of Authors.
