Description: In this solidly written book, the authors explore the psychopathology, assessment, and treatment of anxiety disorders and phobias in childhood and adolescence. In keeping with the structure of the Advances in Psychotherapy series, it is filled with excellent references and examples, and is a terrific standalone resource.
Purpose: According to the authors, the purpose is to examine anxiety and phobias in more detail and to explore the developmental course and expression as well as effective assessment and treatment approaches. They provide a strong summary of the current research and illustrate how this research can be used in evidence-based clinical practice. The authors have succeeded in providing a timely and relevant resource on child and adolescent mental health.
Audience: Like all of the books in this series, the primary target audience is psychologists, but the book is also written at a level to target clinicians across other healthcare disciplines, such as primary and specialty care physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, social workers, and other mental health counselors. This book has utility in both clinical and teaching settings.
Features: The book is divided into four main chapters along with a separate section for case vignettes and a terrific appendix full of useful and relevant tools and resources. It provides solid descriptions of the various disorders along with epidemiological data, differential diagnoses, and comorbid considerations. Theories and models are thoroughly explored, and a separate chapter describes diagnostic and treatment indications. Of note is the overview of the various scales on pages 51-52, which provides a springboard for clinicians to explore the scales that would be applicable in their own practice. Treatment modalities are covered in detail for each of the various disorders, but the discussion of psychopharmacology is quite light. The case vignettes in this series are always a pleasure to read and ponder, and this book is no exception. Readers should be aware that this book was published before DSM-5 was released.
Assessment: This is a very solid and reliable resource for clinicians and academics. It is definitely needed in our field, as there never seems to be a reliable reference on child and adolescent mental health issues. Luckily, we have one now.
