The Defenders: "The Defenders," one of Philip K. Dick's earlier stories, describes a world where a global war between two continents has devastated the surface of the earth. Mankind has been forced to live underground where they continue to fight the war using robot "leadys" who are immune to radiation. Over a writing career that spanned three decades, Philip K. Dick (1928¿1982) published 36 science fiction novels and 121 short stories in which he explored the essence of what makes man human and the dangers of centralized power. Many of his books and short stories have been adapted into movies, notably Blade Runner, Total Recall, Minority Report,and A Scanner Darkly.The recipient of critical acclaim and numerous awards, Dick was inducted into the Science Fiction Hall of Fame in 2005.
