Virginia Poole Arcangelo, PhD is a retired Family Nurse Practitioner who has taught and practiced at Thomas Jefferson University, and in private practices.

Andrew M. Peterson, PharmD, PhD, FCPP, has worked in the pharmaceutical field for more than 25 years. He is John Wyeth Dean Professor of Clinical Pharmacy and Professor of Health Policy at University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.
Veronica Wilber, PhD, APRN-FNP, CNE, FAANP, is an Assistant Professor in the Graduate Nursing program at West Chester University in West Chester, Pennsylvania.

Jennifer A. Reinhold, BA PharmD, BCPS, BCPP, is an Associate Professor of Clinical Pharmacy at the Philadelphia College of Clinical Pharmacy at the University of the Sciences in Philadelphia.

Description: This fifth edition is a comprehensive review of 50 common diseases for students and clinical practitioners. The book covers the pathophysiology and diagnosis of each disorder, drug treatment, and patient monitoring recommendations. What is most unique are the drug overview tables, which are an ideal reference for drug mechanism of action, side effects, drug interactions, and contraindications. There are also algorithms for treatment approaches. The book is available online with student journals and instructor resources. The last edition was published in 2015.
Purpose: The purpose of this book is to provide a review of pharmacotherapeutics relating to drug selection, safety, and efficacy. The objectives are important as they offer a foundation in drug therapeutics including pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, and adverse events. This book is needed compared to similar books as it is written in an easy-to-understand manner. The material is also available online where the online version provides additional study material including student and teacher resources for case studies and answers. The book and website meet the objectives as both provide the readers with skills and foundations in pharmacotherapeutics.
Audience: The book is written for students to advanced practice clinicians and includes 50 of the most common disease states found in medicine. The book does meet the needs of its audience as it gives an in-depth explanation of drug therapy for these common diseases including treatment approaches and recommendations on the prescribing process. The authors are experts in the field and come from an interdisciplinary background of nurse practitioners and pharmacists.
Features: The title is clear - the book covers pharmacotherapeutics in a practical manner. With easy-to-read language and drug tables, the book presents a thorough guide to pharmacotherapeutics. The book is organized into sections for pathophysiology, diagnosis, treatment, and patient monitoring. Some unique features of the book are its drug overview tables that provide a succinct description of mechanisms of action, adverse effects, monitoring, and contraindications. The print and online material are similar. There are no shortcomings identified in the material and the fifth edition has provided some new drugs and treatment updates.
Assessment: While there are other books on the topic content, this book provides readers with a simplistic approach to drug prescribing. Compared to Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach 11th ed., DiPiro et al. (McGraw Hill, 2020), this book covers fewer disorders but focuses greater on drug selection and prescribing. Additionally, it is more focused on patient management topics and the content is organized by drug class. Both books provide a good overview of pathophysiology and a foundation in drug therapeutics. This is an updated version with updated content for medications and treatment.
