About the Author

Lisa Jahn-Clough has written and illustrated many picture books for young children, including Alicia Has a Bad Day, My Friend and I, Missing Molly, and Simon and Molly Plus Hester. She is the author of the Green Light reader series Petal and Poppy and has published several young adult novels and a recent chapter book. She is associate professor of creative writing at Rowan University and also works as a mentor in the Hamline University Low-Residency MFA program in writing for children and young adults. Ed Briant has published for Flux Llewelyn, Roaring Book, Greenwillow Press, and Atheneum. His first book, Paper Parade, was named a Publishers Weekly Flying Start. He is also the author and illustrator of the weekly comic Tales from the Slushpile, published online with Publishers Weekly's Children's Bookshelf since 2005. He has taught illustration at Delaware College of Art and Design in Wilmington, Delaware.

PreS-Gr 1—Petal thinks there is a monster in her garden and seeks the help of her friend Poppy in scaring away the monster. Poppy discovers the monster is a cute little penguin hiding in the garden and invites him inside to get out of the rain. Petal does not like the penguin in their home; he is dirty, and she worries he will eat all their food. With Poppy's encouragement, Penguin takes a bath, cooks, cleans up the dishes, and entertains the friends with an evening of musical "honking" accompaniment. By the end of the night, Penguin is tired and offered a rest on their couch and an invitation to stay with them. Bright colors enhance the digital and whimsical illustrations. The use of panels and text bubbles works well for visual cues and decoding skills of new readers.—Melissa Smith, Royal Oak Public Library, MI
