David J. Tipton, PhD is an Associate Professor of Pharmaceutical Administration and Director of Weekend Doctor of Pharmacy Pathway, Mylan School of Pharmacy, Duquesne University. Dr. Tipton received his BS Pharmacy from the University of Missouri (Kansas City), an MBA from the University of Missouri (Columbia), and a PhD from St. Louis University.

Description: This interesting textbook melds together concepts of professional development and professional growth and their impact on personal growth.
Purpose: The purpose is to help students understand that professional development and professional growth are directly impacted by personal and professional tensions, and that these tensions can have a positive or negative impact on them and/or their patients.
Audience: The intended audience is healthcare students in a classroom setting, but seasoned practitioners would find this a worthy read as well.
Features: The first four chapters discuss professionalism and use student vignettes to illustrate student personal/professional tensions in a bedside scenario. The dark side of professionalism is also illustrated. Later chapters discuss the role of personalities, emotional intelligence, student professionalism, issues related to millennials, and legal and ethical contexts of practice. The introductory vignettes in each chapter lay the foundation for chapter content, with the goal of demonstrating personal and professional tensions and their impact on professional growth. The author has taken a very complex topic and presented it in an easy to read, understandable format.
Assessment: This is a terrific book. All healthcare programs looking to impart professionalism to their students would find this book very helpful.
