Introduction

As New parents your child is the most precious thing in the world to you, and the most vulnerable of human beings. From infancy through his preschool years you must be ever vigilant in protecting your child from potential hurts and upsets.
This book is dedicated to helping you keep your child out of harm's way. The task may seem overwhelming at times when you realize that tiny fingers, for instance, are fair game for doors that pinch, stoves that burn, and glass that cut or scratch tender skin. In fact, many of the objects and furnishings you take for granted around your house--in the kitchen, the bathroom, the family room, and even your own backyard-- can be hidden perils for your child.
In infancy, your child is completely helpless. As she grows and develops, she acquires a powerful natural drive to touch, to taste, to try, and to discover new things about the world around her. As her world expands, the risks multiply. The more you know about the potential hazards in what you may have formerly thought of as your "safe" house, the better prepared you will be to protect your child.
You may already be aware of some of the precautions noted in this book; others you may never have anticipated. I hope that these tips and reminders will help you protect your child from a fearful experience, unnecessary tears, a painful hurt, or a life-threatening danger.
By putting this advice into practice, you will reap added benefits: You will become less apprehensive about bringing up your baby, you will feel more relaxed and self-assured about the process, and you will be better able to enjoy your child...knowing he or she is perfectly safe. --Jeanne E. Miller
