Overview

Penelope's Experiences in Scotland: is the second of four volumes in the series. Penelope Hamilton is a young American lady abroad in Scotland with her friends Francesca, who is "aggressively American," and Salemina, "a citizen of the world." Together they endure the damp chill of Edinburgh, attend an aristocrat's birthday feast, are presented at the Scottish court, explore the countryside, and immerse themselves in the society of small-town Scottish life. Romance and marriage may also find themselves in the offing (goodreads).

Penelope's Experiences in Scotland was first published in 1898 and was entitled "Penelope's Progress." It had no illustrations but was reprinted three times in 1898, three times in 1899, and once in 1900. The second edition was published in October, 1900, included 58 illustrations by C. E. Brock, and was retitled "Penelope's Experiences in Scotland. It is likely that the title and illustrations were influenced by the first volume in the series, Penelope's English Experiences. These are carried through into the third volume, as well.
