CHAPTER 1

Princess Abigail lived in a beautiful palace with her father, the king; her kindly mother, Queen Isabel; and pet parrot, Hubert. Every day, the palace held a tea party, and every morning, Abigail joyfully leapt from bed. "Good morning, Hubert. Isn't it a gorgeous day for a tea party?"

"It surely is, Princess," Hubert would reply, ruffling his bright-green-and-gold feathers. "What shall we put on the menu? Hubert wants crackers!"

"Oh, Hubert, silly parrot! You always want crackers. Today we shall have cucumber sandwiches, strawberry jam, and tea biscuits in all the colors of the rainbow. Won't that be lovely?"

Before Hubert could screech his reply, the princess would already be skipping down the magnificent palace stairs two steps at a time toward the royal dining hall, where her parents were settling to breakfast.

"Good morning, Mother and Father. Isn't it a marvelous day for a tea party? I shall wear pink." The little princess twirled round and round like a ballerina with her arms stretched to the sky.

Queen Isabel laughed in delight. "Pink will be very festive, dear." The queen commanded the servants to prepare for the tea party. As always, all the children in the kingdom were invited. Music played, and they sang, danced, and cartwheeled across the palace lawns.

But one terrible morning, the tea parties came to an end. Queen Isabel had suddenly fallen ill and died. Soon thereafter, Abigail's father, the great king, took a new wife.

The wedding was a lavish affair. Royal guests came from near and far. The royal orchestra played, and everyone waltzed—except for Princess Abigail, who didn't feel much like dancing. How she longed for her mother.

Hubert could not bear to see her sorrow. "Oh, Princess, do not be sad," he squawked. "If your mother were here, she would be most unhappy to see you weep, and besides, your father has found a new queen to take care of you. Everything will be all right."

But try as he might, Hubert could not make Abigail happy. And truth be told, he missed his tea- party crackers.

The morning after the royal wedding, the princess woke from a sound sleep to find her bed and nightclothes wet. Abigail could not understand where the water had come from.

Before she could get out of bed to investigate further, her new stepmother stormed into the room.

"Phew, what is that smell? And why are your bed and nightgown wet?" the queen demanded.

"I-I don't know," stammered the princess. "I must have woken during the night and spilled water on my bed." But she did not remember drinking water or spilling any in the night. How could this have happened? she wondered.
