Overview

A vast number of children in the United States are evaluated and treated for urologic conditions by urologists practicing general urology due to the relatively few fellowship-trained pediatric urologists. Pediatric Urology: A General Urologist’s Guide is written specifically for general urologists as a concise and comprehensive reference of the more common pediatric urologic conditions. Other health practitioners (i.e. pediatrician, family practitioner, residents, medical students, and mid-level providers) will also find this book a key reference. Written by well-respected pediatric urologists, this volume will assist the health care provider to rapidly review the essential aspects of the physical examination, evaluation, diagnostic testing, and management while the patient is still in the office. The chapters are arranged into four sections to allow for easier access to the information: office urology, genitalia, urinary tract, and miscellaneous topics. Furthermore, the first chapter of the book will be dedicated to facts and figures (ex. normal penile and renal lengths based on age, dosing of common medications, and grading system for vesicoureteral reflux) that serves as a single source for this information. Purpose: It is intended as a comprehensive guide to common pediatric urology conditions, and the book provides up-to-date information and treatment recommendations for the commonly seen conditions.
Audience: Attending general urologists who care for pediatric patients are the intended audience, but other healthcare practitioners, such as primary care physicians, students, residents, and nurses, would find it helpful. It is a useful guide for those who occasionally care for children with urologic problems, as it provides up-to-date, well-referenced information as well as treatment recommendations. Because it provides only the more common approaches to these conditions, it is inadequate for those seeking a more in-depth approach.
Features: The book is divided into four parts, although this breakdown may be confusing to readers. The 20 chapters focus on the most common topics in pediatric urology, including vesicoureteral reflux, hypospadias, and common penile and scrotal anomalies. The information is presented in a succinct manner to enable quick perusal to understand a topic or to look up a condition and quickly find the current treatment options. Spina bifida and the neurogenic bladder is poorly represented, despite its prevalence, yet an entire chapter is devoted to tissue engineering, which is less relevant to the audience. The multitude of photos and charts throughout the book excellently illustrate concepts.
Assessment: Chapters are well written by experts in the field who cover the topics well for the anticipated audience, but there are limitations to the coverage. This is an anticipated drawback of a guide. As compared to Campbell-Walsh Urology, 9th edition, Wein et al. (Elsevier, 2007), which is a common reference for general urologists, this book provides less detail, but more practical information.
