Description: This softcover book on pediatric surgery is divided into 83 chapters written by approximately 70 authors. All the chapters have a similar format and contain questions concerning the chapter topic followed by short, factual answers.
Purpose: Produced by four pediatric surgeons with the intention of providing "additional core knowledge for medical students, pediatric and surgical residents, pediatric surgical trainees, pediatric nurse practitioners, primary care pediatricians, family practitioners, med-peds practitioners, and pediatric surgeons," the book actually contains the very standard information concerning most of the topics.
Audience: The table of contents mirrors most standard textbooks of pediatric surgery with a few additions in the special topics section. The other sections are arranged by anatomical considerations and aggregate clinical conditions that fit into that particular anatomical structure or region, i.e. cardiovascular, abdominal, head and neck. The book concludes with the special topics section that touches lightly on topics of neurosurgery, neonatology, transplantation, issues of healthcare reform, and even the subject of "How Do I Become a Pediatric Surgeon?"
Features: The chapters are appropriately illustrated with line drawings and radiographs. The question/answer format makes easy reading with quick conveyance of the simple and essential information. Each chapter concludes with a short bibliography containing the classic articles associated with the topic or supplemental articles expanding the topic.
Assessment: This book contains much of the standard information available in the two large and standard textbooks of pediatric surgery. Its simple presentation through the question/answer format makes presentation of material facile and highly appropriate for individuals with little familiarity with the field of pediatric surgery. For advanced students of the art, the presentation is interesting and novel, but not highly informative.
