Description: This is the second edition of a book that strives to provide an expanded, updated review of commonly seen pediatric pathologies, as well as infrequently seen conditions which have important patient care implications and, thus, must be recognized on imaging. The first edition was published in 1998.
Purpose: The authors' intent was to update the first edition in terms of image quality, technique, and references. The mission is the same as in the first edition, which is to provide a guide for trainees and practicing radiologists to commonly encountered pediatric conditions. There is an identified need for case-based learning, particularly for those participating in the CORE and certifying examinations, as well as the maintenance of certification process. This is an excellent resource for these exam takers in particular.
Audience: The primary audience is radiology residents, with a secondary audience of general radiologists and pediatricians. For the latter group, it aims to provide a detailed review of disease entities. It is well suited for residents, as well as general radiologists who may have ongoing exposure to basic pediatric imaging, but it likely does not have a viable audience among practicing pediatricians. There is a significant number of contributing authors, all of whom are well versed in pediatric imaging. The editors appear to have chosen chapter authors based upon subspecialty expertise in the different organ systems.
Features: The book presents multiple imaging cases in a variety of modalities. It is divided by sections into neuroradiology, GI, GU, bone, and a variety of other organ systems. It also includes a useful section on syndromes. The cases are of good quality and, for the most part, are well annotated to show the relevant imaging findings. There is slight redundancy in some of the cases and their discussions, but this is not necessarily a drawback as the main audience (residents) benefits from repetition and presentation of information in different ways. The references that appear at the end of each case are appropriate. The most comprehensive sections are the gastrointestinal and genitourinary sections. Cases cover topics commonly encountered in the imaging of children, with images of good quality. The well-written and comprehensive discussions provide important information about the case and the disease entity. The neuroradiology section, on the other hand, is less successful in accomplishing the mission of the book. The images are excellent and include high-end imaging sequences such as diffusion and spectroscopy. The cases are diverse and cover a spectrum of pathologies. Where the section is less effective is in the case discussions. The explanations are abbreviated and do not provide a robust discussion of the disease entity. Obtaining access to the online resources is not as straightforward as that offered by other vendors. It was relatively easy to create an account, but there are no specific instructions after that point. Once the title is entered into the search box and selected, it is more apparent what the next steps are. The challenges in accessing the web-based material are worth the effort, however. The clips for selected cases are of high quality and very helpful. On the other hand, it is slightly less likely that readers will review this material as it requires interrupting reading of the book to go online to review the clip. If the website offered an entire ebook version, with the clips embedded, it would be more useful.
Assessment: I used the first edition during training, and I found this second edition just as helpful. The book is comprehensive in covering all organ systems encountered in pediatric imaging. The images are of good quality, with findings generally well highlighted with arrows. The book is nicely divided into organ systems, which makes it very intuitive to use. This approach also allows readers to perform supplemental or pre-reading and then test their knowledge by reviewing the cases. The authors have accomplished their goal and have provided a useful resource for trainees to review pediatric imaging in a practical, case-based format.
