Description: This is a generously illustrated, quick reference for common and not so common pediatric neurological problems.
Purpose: It is a comprehensive and timely reference of pediatric neurological problems for practitioners on the go. Particularly given the uneasiness many non-neurologists feel in dealing with these issues, this book can be a genuine help.
Audience: The book is written for a wide audience — neurologists, but also any practitioners caring for pediatric patients. The topics covered are diverse: abnormalities of head size to febrile seizures to multiple sclerosis white matter. Some are appropriately addressed by non-neurologists, but others fall solely in the purview of neurologists or neurological subspecialists (multiple sclerosis).
Features: Like most books, it begins with a review of the basics of history and physical examination. The remainder of the book is divided into common pediatric neurological problems (ataxia, seizures and epilepsy, headache, ataxia, cerebral palsy) and general neurological disorders (neuropathy, neuro-infectious disease, stroke, traumatic brain injury, autism). The book is meant to be succinct reference, and the abundant tables are a plus. Especially nice are numerous pictures of genetic syndromes, neuro-imaging, dermatological findings, and histology. Minor editing issues do not detract from the book's usefulness.
Assessment: While it will not serve as a definitive reference for practicing child neurologists, this book is a very useful initial reference for general pediatric practitioners, adult neurologists, and neurology trainees. The many tables, illustrations, and pictures are a particular strength. It certainly is worthy of consideration as a reference for one's bookshelf.
