Description: This review book for nursing students and healthcare professionals working with the pediatric population has multiple unfolding case studies followed by NCLEX-style questions. Answers for each question appear at the end of each chapter with rationales. Some of the case studies have e-resources that offer ancillary information.
Purpose: Students are often overwhelmed with question-and-answer type reviews. This book offers another review format that uses case studies, which provide a patient scenario accompanied by a variety of NCLEX-style questions that allow learners to actively participate. They are able to review the correct answers with rationales at the end of the case study. Web links and eResources provide visual and often realistic information to support the content. Providing information in a variety of ways is imperative to reaching learners with a variety of learning styles.
Audience: The test review was developed for nursing students and healthcare professionals working with pediatric patients. Students are able to use the book as a review prior to taking the NCLEX. Healthcare professionals currently working with pediatric patients may find the book useful as a review.
Features: The book is separated into chapters on body systems with additional chapters on specific pediatric information such as growth and development and care of the hospitalized child. Most chapters include one to six unfolding case studies. Each case study is followed by a variety of questions and e-resources with rationale. Most of the e-resources are links to YouTube videos, Medscape, and Epocrates. While some of the e-resources are no longer available, those that work are up to date and provide valuable information. Correct answers and rationales for each case study are listed at the end of each chapter. However, some questions simply list the correct answer and do not provide detailed rationales, typically for true/false and fill-in-the-blank type questions.
Assessment: This book is recommended as a NCLEX review for pediatric nursing. The case study format, coupled with the e-resources, provides students with an opportunity to critically think through the situation while adding point-of-need access.
