Description: This pocket-sized guide provides brief and clinically relevant information and resources on pediatric nursing for students or clinicians at the point of care. It is designed to supplement Essentials of Pediatric Nursing, 3rd edition, Kyle and Carman (Wolters Kluwer, 2017).
Purpose: The purpose is to provide essential, clinically relevant information in a concise format. These worthy objectives are met.
Audience: Although specifically designed for students, the guide may appeal to nurses new to pediatric care. The authors appear to be credible authorities in pediatric nursing care.
Features: The guide is organized into three main sections: principles of nursing care in children, common health disorders, and common laboratory diagnostic tests and nursing procedures. Key pediatric topics are described in concise format, supplemented by figures, photos, and tables for selected concepts. This is a great adjunct to the main textbook, and the pocket size makes it easier for students to bring to the clinical area. For example, the nursing procedures section would be beneficial as a guide for students on the unit.
Assessment: This is a useful pocket-sized book for nursing students in pediatric clinical areas, but it should be used as a supplement, not as the primary textbook in pediatric nursing.
