Description: This text-atlas is divided into 27 brief chapters organized around the authors' collective experience in pediatric neuropathology. Chapters cover topics ranging from normal development to the diverse disorders that can affect the developing nervous system, demonstrated with gross and microscopic illustrations and radiological images.
Purpose: The aim is to summarize the categories of pediatric disease that affect the nervous system, along with current concise clinical, morphological, and biological data. The authors have succeeded in creating an up-to-date, richly illustrated reference atlas of pediatric neuropathology.
Audience: The book is intended for students of neuropathology, neurology, and neuroscience. General neuropathologists with less frequent exposure to pediatric specimens will find this useful, as will pediatric neurologists. The individual experience of the senior authors as well as the combined experience of all authors is considerable.
Features: Normal development of the nervous system is reviewed as well as pediatric neuropathological disorders, including malformations, vascular diseases, syndromes, inborn errors of metabolism, tumors, infections, degenerative disorders, white matter disease, trauma, muscle disease, epilepsy, and other entities. The chapters on normal brain and muscle development are well done and nicely documented with quality illustrations. The many gross photographs throughout the atlas are of high quality and particularly helpful. Although richly illustrated, many of the photomicrographs are unfortunately difficult to see due to the magnification, resolution, or low contrast. Some of the digitized images show distortion, apparently associated with enlargement. References are organized by chapters in a separate section. Although most chapters contain abundant references, some contain only one or two listings. Many references are based in current neuropathology texts, and a number of the papers cited are old, but still of considerable historical interest.
Assessment: This atlas offers a welcome, current addition to the reference literature in the underrepresented area of pediatric neuropathology. Friede's Developmental Neuropathology, 2nd edition (Springer, 1989) and Duckett's Pediatric Neuropathology (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 1995) will remain loyal companions on the neuropathology bookshelf, but an up-to-date pediatric neuropathology atlas introducing new entities and providing diagnostic updates on better known disorders is long overdue.
