Description: Updated from the 2009 edition, this book on infectious diseases in children offers the most current recommendations and information to help guide clinical practice today. It is organized into logical sections by anatomical site and includes a number of new chapters covering topics such as fever syndromes, travel-related infections, healthcare-acquired infections, and infections complicating chronic diseases, such as the child with neurological impairment or asplenia.
Purpose: The purpose of this edition is to not only provide updated infectious disease information, but to do so in a thorough but easy-to-use manner for busy practitioners. Its practical approach, visual layout, and references succeed in detailing key points in management while effectively highlighting important aspects of care, such as quality improvement and vaccine refusal.
Audience: Given its thorough and practical nature, the book appeals to a wide range of readers. Busy generalists and specialists in pediatrics will find it appropriate and easy to use in their inpatient or outpatient settings, but practitioners from physicians to midlevel providers in other fields such as family medicine and trainees also will benefit from its organization and approach. The authors have succeeded in gathering an extremely knowledgeable group of contributors from a host of different institutions representing not only infectious disease, but also a variety of specialty departments.
Features: This book includes a number of sections not traditionally found in infectious disease resources, such as infections complicating chronic diseases, and healthcare-acquired infections, such as shunt and surgical site infections. Sections specifically dedicated to quality improvement and infection control in the office and hospital are well written and provide a concise guide for management and prevention policies. Lastly, a chapter dedicated to vaccine safety and risk communication is especially needed given the substantial attention and media coverage given to vaccination refusal. The photos are of excellent color quality and help with visual diagnosis. Tables are concise and focused on practicality, with easy to read information such as differentials and dosages for recommended treatment regimens. Where possible, evaluation, diagnosis, and management algorithms are used to provide a logical and well-thought-out process to approach pediatric infectious disease clinical care.
Assessment: This book is exactly what it promises. At 710 pages, it is informative and thorough yet concise. Its focus on practical aspects of management makes it a key resource for both early learners and busy practitioners.
