Description: This book is a pocket tool for nurse practitioners to quickly utilize. It addresses specific emergent/urgent pediatric complaints and lists the pertinent information providers need to safely and effectively treat patients.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to be a quick reference tool for providers, rather than a comprehensive review of each disease/disorder. While it does not list specific objectives, it notes the guidelines are evidence based and can be adapted for care. The preface lists what to expect in each section, including the patient history, physical examination, differential diagnosis, management, documentation, and tips. The book meets these objectives in each section.
Audience: This book is written for ambulatory pediatric nurse practitioners. I would expect this book to be utilized in a pediatric primary care or urgent care clinic based on its quick reference tools. The authors are experienced emergency nurse practitioners and doctorate prepared nurses. They are credible sources.
Features: The book is organized in a head-to-toe fashion by chief complaint, starting with the head and moving to the lower extremities. It also addresses miscellaneous topics at the end of the book. Within each section (Head, Ear, Mouth/Throat, Chest), the topics are not listed in alphabetical order, which would be helpful to the readers. The pictures and illustrations are a great tool and include pertinent information for the NP. Within the differential diagnosis section, the authors list possible diseases/diagnoses related to the chief complaint in paragraph form. This makes it difficult for the readers to find quick information. The index is helpful and organized in a logical fashion.
Assessment: This book is a great reference tool for new and experienced nurse practitioners. It would be especially useful for students and those training. The book addresses very general pediatric complaints and does not go into detail regarding specific diseases or diagnoses. However, it does a great job of showing the provider how to address a complaint in a logical manner through history, physical examination, diagnostics, treatment, and documentation. Overall, this is a very useful tool and I recommend its use to ambulatory pediatric nurse practitioners.
