Description: Expanded and updated since the original publication of 2004, this is the most comprehensive book on pediatric dialysis available. It covers all major clinical aspects of pediatric renal replacement therapies. The accessible structure of the book enables readers to review the basics as well as the complexities in a thorough and organized fashion. Both the addition of several new authors and the new structure give the book a refreshing look.
Purpose: This edition continues its focus on all relevant clinical aspects of pediatric renal replacement therapies. The field of pediatric dialysis is rapidly evolving and many advances have been made since the 2004 publication. These advances are discussed and integrated into this update, making it the only comprehensive textbook in this field. Chapters have been reorganized and the number has been expanded, greatly improving the book. In contrast to other books on dialysis, this one is focused solely on renal replacement therapy in children.
Audience: Given its structure and accessibility, this is a great resource for clinicians at all levels. As noted by the editors, it is intended to function as a state-of-the-art resource for clinicians to provide the best possible care for children in need of renal replacement therapy. The wide range of topics also makes it a useful tool for clinicians at a more senior level who want to quickly review a topic. Lastly, due to its accessible structure, patients and families seeking medical information also might find this helpful. It is authored by over 70 experts in pediatric nephrology practicing in various parts of the world, including virtually all the specialists with the highest international reputations in the field.
Features: The book's 42 chapters are grouped into eight parts, each of which is devoted to a specific subsection of pediatric dialysis, starting with an essential primer and finishing with a section on blood purification, covering all aspects of hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis as well as pharmacologic aspects in between. All chapters start with key words, use a similar structure with easy-to-read paragraphs and numerous and well-integrated figures and tables, and are well referenced with up-to-date as well as key publications.
Assessment: This book successfully accomplishes, and more often exceeds, its goals. It is the only publication focusing solely on pediatric dialysis, in contrast to other major dialysis books (including Handbook of Dialysis, 4th edition, Daugirdas et al. (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2007), Handbook of Dialysis Therapy, 4th edition, Nissenson and Fine (Elsevier, 2008), and Principles and Practice of Dialysis, 4th edition, Henrich (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2009)) that cover the pediatric aspects in designated chapters or sections.
