It provides clinical summaries based on symptoms and signs and then builds a clinically relevant algorithm. It is intended to be used in concert with Nelson Textbook of Pediatrics, 20th edition, Kliegman et al. (Elsevier, 2016), which provides more detail after the initial presentation.
Purpose: The title basically describes the purpose of the book. The print format can be useful for older readers, while the online version will appeal to younger readers. Both versions meet their stated objectives.
Audience: The audience is clinical care providers, beginning with medical students and moving on to residents, fellows, and attendings, as well as nurses and nurse practitioners.
Features: The clinical material is presented beginning with the symptom and/or sign. Both a written summary and an algorithm are then presented, which are useful depending on the preference of the reader. Chapters are easy to follow and it is also easy to make the transition from the summary to the algorithm to the textbook for more detail.
Assessment: This is a very good resource for both learning and accomplished clinicians.
