Peanut is a short-story that tells the story of an orphaned little boy and a woman named the Rose of Texas, both of whom were "family members" of Blazer Sam, an outlaw who lived in and operated out of the Western mountains. No matter the foul deeds Blazer may have committed, he provided well for Peanut and Rose and was a good father and loved companion, especially for Peanut. Blazer had been killed in a gunfight, and Peanut, who missed him dearly, spent most of his time around Blazer's grave. Peanut is taken under the wing of and goes to live with Miss Schofield, a kind and progressive educator. But before he leaves, he swears he'll return to the Rose and work a gold mine to provide for her as Blazer Sam would have. Maybe he will; then, again, maybe it's just a boy's silly dream, and he's gone for good.
