Overview

In these days when, for the second time in the memory of a single generation, world war has plunged us into a vortex of calamities and terrific experience, there is much to rethink and re-learn, so that one hesitates to commit himself to print. But there is a duty to bring our several contributions to the common stock, and to venture even some thinking aloud since by that means we may stimulate one another to seek and find new truth--truth in thought and in feeling, both of which are essential in the quest for a living peace.

In that spirit this paper is offered and one ventures to plead for a new effort at mutual understanding, tolerance and co-operation within the Peace Movement.

About the Author

Bertram Pickard belonged to a generation of Friends who helped to redefine the nature of Quaker international work between 1920 and 1940. In the aftermath of the First World War he played a major role in broadening the Quaker approach to peacemaking, encompassing not only conflict resolution through the peaceful settlement of disputes but also conflict prevention through institution-building at the international level. His support, however, for collective security and a peace enforcement role for the newly created League of Nations provoked strong opposition from those in London Yearly Meeting who viewed any support for the use of force as incompatible with Quaker beliefs.

1921-1926 - Secretary, Friends Peace Committee of London Yearly Meeting of the Society of Friends.

1926-1940 - Secretary, Friends Geneva Center; also Chairman, International Consultative Group on Peace and Disarmament, Geneva, Switzerland (1935-1940)

1940-1941 - Fellow of Woodbrooke, Selly Oak Colleges, Birmingham, England.

1941 - Lecturer at Pendle Hill, Autumn Term.

1941-1942 - Associate of the American Friends Service Committee.
