Peace at a Price: A Survivor Creates and Protects her New Identity

Sexually, physically, mentally abused Deirdre Meyer had already spent too much time struggling with the questions every abused woman has to answer: "Why didn't I just leave him, why didn't I call the police every time he threatened to kill me, why did I get away and then go back to him again and again and again?"

Now there was no more time to think. It was time to act, to save herself and her young son, if she still could. Yet it wasn't only the disappearing into life underground that she feared. It was the coming back out, resurfacing with a new name, new documentation and a blank page for the first forty plus years of her life. That was what shattered her nerves and threatened her hopes for stability. And how could she keep her son and herself safe from a man who only made very real threats, and didn't ever forget them?

This book is the true story of how a middle-aged mother of a teenage son from a previous marriage escaped violent abuse and struggled through what so often seemed to be insurmountable obstacles. Only then did she come back with a new life, a new identity and a completely new and much deeper understanding of who she was. Only then did she recognize what purpose would guide her through her new life and freedom from that day on. It simply was the price she had to pay for the peace she knew she deserved.

About the Author

Author: This story is true in its essential facts. Part of the proceeds will go to a domestic violence shelter.

Domestic violence was not a definitive part of the author’s background, neither her childhood nor her early professional life. A former writer and copyeditor for the federal government, she married a man who became abusive shortly after the wedding. She faced the reality of intimate partner violence with profound naiveté, obsessively trying to understand him and find a solution. She stayed too long, but in 2006 prepared to go underground and become a different person. The price of safety, freedom, and peace was her identity.

She is still alive and safe and has credit without cross-references in any credit bureau to her old identity. She has served as a board member of several domestic violence programs and president of one, been a trained advocate on a crisis line, gone on police domestic violence calls and mentored others needing to disappear. She is sharing her story in hopes it can be of use to someone.
