Frank Bunn, MD is Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School, and is a former President of the American Society of Hematology

Jon Aster, MD is an educator at Harvard Medical School who specializes in anatomic pathology and clinical pathology. Dr. Aster is also affiliated with Brigham and Women's Hospital.

Description: This is the second edition of a book focusing on the pathophysiology of blood disorders. The previous edition was published in 2010.
Purpose: The purpose is to present the "physiologic principles underlying the regulation and function of blood cells and hemostasis, as well as the pathophysiologic mechanisms responsible for the development of blood disorders." These very worthy objectives are superbly met by this book.
Audience: This book was originally conceived as a companion for a hematology course for second-year medical students. It would be useful to any medical students, fellows (in any clinical discipline), or practicing physicians wanting an update on the pathophysiology of blood disorders. It would also be of interest to allied health practitioners working closely with practicing clinical hematologists or hematopathologists, e.g., nurse practitioners, physician assistants, clinical laboratory scientists (students or in practice), etc. The authors are internationally recognized experts in this area.
Features: I raved about the first edition. I'm raving even more about this second edition. The authors did not detail the specific areas updated in this edition. It doesn't matter. This book should be required reading for every physician. As the authors comment in the preface, medical student curriculum reform is removing hematology teaching in medical school. As a result (and I can personally attest to this), interns and residents do not know clinical hematology at all, and many primary care physicians or advanced practice practitioners do not even know how to do a basic workup for anemia, let alone have any familiarity with clinical hematology medical terms. Regardless, this book will rescue all of us. In one fell swoop and in keeping with the excellence of the first edition, this wonderful concise and clear book covers (breathtakingly) all of hematology. The focus on principles and pathophysiology is brilliant — this is how learners will remember and thereby apply their learning to their everyday practice. The chapters follow a standard format, with key learning points identified and helpful self-assessment questions. I recommend reading at least one chapter a day — within one month practicing physicians should be relatively competent in basic clinical hematology, or conversant enough to have an intelligent bidirectional discussion with a clinical hematologist or hematopathologist.
Assessment: Wow - this is a superb second edition! Get it.
