Description: This comprehensive review of the pathology of rheumatic diseases is unique in its primary focus on the etiology of these complex, often poorly understood diseases.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide an informative book on what is known about the etiologies of the rheumatic diseases. For many of these disease processes, the true etiology is still poorly understood. However, detailed focus on the pathology has led to important observations that help perpetuate the progress of understanding rheumatic diseases. Few resources provide such a unique approach to understanding rheumatology. Because the fundamental processes which lead to rheumatic diseases are still poorly understood, a book aimed at contributing to this field is a worthy objective and the author has successfully contributed to the dissemination of knowledge about these diseases.
Audience: This book is targeted for specialists in rheumatic diseases, ranging from residents on a rheumatology rotation, fellows in rheumatology, and practicing physicians in the field of rheumatology. It also is a valuable reference in the library of pathologists who provide insight into diagnoses through examination of specimens taken from complex patients. The author is quite credible in his field and has emerged as an authority in the pathology of rheumatic diseases.
Features: This book covers the majority of rheumatic diseases with the primary focus on pathology and pathobiology of these diseases. Both common and rare diseases are covered. Incredibly detailed sections on rheumatoid arthritis, seronegative spondyloarthropathies, and rheumatic fever are highlighted by historical perspectives, histologically documented details on the progression of disease, and clinical manifestations of the pathological process. The over 300 figures offer unique perspectives on rheumatic diseases which most clinicians do not have the luxury to observe in practice. Although figures are helpful, some would be better served with the addition of color and more detailed annotation of the focus of the figures in the legends.
Assessment: This is a valuable book to include in the library of any practicing rheumatologist. Although the language and style of writing are sometimes difficult to follow, possibly due to translation, overall this is a well-written, informative book that sheds light onto complex processes. It serves as reminder of how much we have learned about rheumatic diseases in the last few hundred years and an inspiration to continue to understand the pathogenesis of rheumatic diseases. Finally, because the information we glean from continued research in the field of rheumatology continues to add insight into the pathogenesis of these diseases, this updated edition is important to educate physicians about the most contemporary theories and hypotheses on disese processes.
